RISE AND FALL OF COMMUNISM IN RUSSIA
The rise and fall of communism in Russia is a significant chapter in world history, marking a period of profound political, social, and economic transformation. This period, which began with the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917 and effectively ended with the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, saw the establishment and eventual decline of a state-controlled economy and a one-party political system under communist ideology.
Definition of Communism: Communism is a political and economic ideology that advocates for a classless society in which all property and resources are communally owned, and each person contributes and receives according to their ability and needs. The ideology seeks to eliminate the inequalities associated with capitalism by abolishing private ownership and placing the means of production under state or collective control.
Origins of Communism: The intellectual foundation of communism was laid by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels in their 1848 work, The Communist Manifesto. Marxist theory predicted the eventual overthrow of capitalist societies by the proletariat (working class) and the establishment of a communist state.
1.Pre-Revolutionary Russia: Prior to the rise of communism, Russia was an autocratic state under Tsarist rule, characterized by vast inequalities, widespread poverty, and limited political freedom. The social and economic conditions, exacerbated by Russia’s involvement in World War I, created fertile ground for revolutionary ideas.
2.The Bolshevik Revolution (1917): The October Revolution of 1917, led by the Bolshevik Party under Vladimir Lenin, marked the beginning of communist rule in Russia. The Bolsheviks overthrew the Provisional Government, which had replaced the Tsar earlier that year, and established a socialist state based on Marxist-Leninist principles.
3.Establishment of the Soviet Union (1922): Following the Civil War between the Bolshevik Red Army and the anti-Bolshevik White forces, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was officially established in 1922. The USSR became the world's first communist state, with Lenin as its leader.
