TRANSGENDER ISSUES

Introduction

Definition and Concept

Transgender Identity

i.Definition: Transgender individuals are those whose gender identity or expression differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. This encompasses a wide range of identities, including trans men, trans women, non-binary, genderqueer, and more.

ii.Understanding Gender vs. Sex

Sex: Refers to the biological differences between males and females, such as genitalia and genetic differences.

Gender: Refers to the roles, behaviours, activities, and expectations that society considers appropriate for men and women.

iii.Gender Dysphoria: Some transgender individuals experience gender dysphoria, a condition of distress due to a mismatch between their gender identity and assigned sex at birth. Medical interventions like hormone therapy or surgeries may be sought to alleviate this discomfort.
