Definition

The digital divide refers to the gap between individuals, households, and communities with varying levels of access to information and communication technologies (ICTs). This divide manifests in disparities related to access to the internet, digital devices, and the skills needed to use these technologies effectively. The digital divide is often influenced by socio-economic, geographic, and demographic factors, resulting in unequal opportunities for participation in the digital economy and society.

Concept

1.Access to Technology

i.Infrastructure: The digital divide encompasses differences in access to the necessary infrastructure, such as broadband internet, mobile networks, and electricity. In India, these disparities are pronounced between urban and rural areas.

ii.Devices: Ownership and availability of digital devices, including smartphones, computers, and tablets, are key components of the digital divide. Affordability and availability of these devices can limit access for low-income households.
