CRIMES AGAINST WOMEN
Crimes against women remain a significant issue globally, and India is no exception. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) provides detailed data, shedding light on the various forms of violence faced by women. These statistics reflect domestic violence, sexual assault, dowry deaths, human trafficking, and other forms of harassment.
1.Domestic Violence: According to NCRB, there were over 125,000 reported cases of domestic violence in 2022, a figure that likely underestimates the true prevalence due to underreporting. Studies suggest that up to 70% of women experience domestic violence in their lifetime.
2.Sexual Assault: In 2022, around 34,000 cases of rape were reported, with minors constituting nearly 40% of these victims. The conviction rate for rape cases remains low, at about 27%.
3.Dowry Deaths: Approximately 7,000 dowry-related deaths were reported in 2022, reflecting the persistence of this illegal practice. Despite strict laws, dowry harassment continues to claim lives, with many cases going unreported or misclassified.
4.Human Trafficking: Nearly 3,000 cases of human trafficking were reported, with a significant number involving young girls forced into prostitution. The real numbers are likely much higher, with estimates suggesting tens of thousands of women and girls are trafficked annually.
5.Other Forms of Violence: Harassment, stalking, and acid attacks contribute to the grim statistics, with over 10,000 cases of harassment and 1,000 cases of acid attacks reported annually. Cybercrime against women, including cyberstalking and online harassment, is also on the rise.
