UNDERSTANDING POVERTY AND HUNGER

Introduction to Poverty and Hunger

Definition and Dimensions of Poverty

Poverty refers to a condition where individuals or communities lack the financial resources to meet the minimum standards of living, including food, shelter, clothing, and basic amenities. The World Bank defines extreme poverty as living on less than $2.15 per day (2022 update). In India, the official poverty line is based on calorie consumption and minimum income thresholds as defined by various committees such as the Tendulkar Committee and the Rangarajan Committee.

Dimensions of Poverty

1.Income Poverty: Inadequate income to meet basic needs.

2.Multidimensional Poverty: Includes lack of access to education, healthcare, sanitation, and housing.

3.Urban vs. Rural Poverty: Urban poverty often reflects inadequate housing and unemployment, whereas rural poverty is linked to lack of agricultural income, indebtedness, and poor infrastructure.

4.Social Poverty: Exclusion based on caste, gender, or ethnicity.

5.Generational Poverty: Poverty passed down through generations due to systemic issues.
