INDIA'S NUCLEAR PROGRAMME
The genesis of India’s nuclear programme can be traced back to the early years following independence in 1947. The foundation of this programme was laid by Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha, a pioneering physicist and visionary who is often referred to as the father of Indian nuclear programme. Dr. Bhabha recognized the potential of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and for strengthening national security.
1.Establishment of Atomic Energy Commission (AEC): In 1948, the Government of India established the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) with Dr. Bhabha as its first chairman. The AEC was tasked with formulating policies for the development and control of atomic energy in India.
2.Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR): Founded in 1945 by Dr. Bhabha, TIFR played a crucial role in providing the necessary scientific foundation and research capabilities for India’s nascent nuclear programme.
3.Department of Atomic Energy (DAE): In 1954, the Department of Atomic Energy was established to consolidate various efforts in atomic research and development under one umbrella. The DAE has since overseen all nuclear activities in the country.
India’s nuclear strategy involved evaluating various alternatives to meet its energy needs and security requirements.
