ELECTORAL POLITICS

WHY ARE ELECTIONS NEEDED?

1.Large Communities: In small groups, it might be possible for everyone to sit together and make decisions. But in larger communities, like a country, it’s impractical for everyone to be directly involved in every decision.

2.Limited Time And Expertise: Not everyone has the time, knowledge, or expertise to make informed decisions on every issue. So, people need representatives to make decisions on their behalf.

3.Alternative Methods Are Problematic: We can consider selecting representatives based on age, experience, or knowledge. While theoretically possible, these methods raise questions about how to measure these attributes fairly. Furthermore, without elections, there’s no clear way to remove representatives who aren’t performing well or aren’t fulfilling the desires of their constituents.

Functions Of Elections In Democracy

1.Choice Of Lawmakers: Through elections, people can choose who will make laws on their behalf. This is a direct way to translate public will into public policy.

2.Formation Of Government: Elections decide which individuals or parties have the mandate to form a government. They thereby have a significant impact on the decision-making processes that affect everyone in the country.

3.Policy Direction: People can choose a political party whose policies and ideologies they agree with. This will guide the laws that are made and the policies that are implemented.

4.Accountability: Elections provide a mechanism for the public to reward or punish representatives. If the representatives do not perform as per the expectations, they can be voted out in the next election.
