UNDERSTANDING SECULARISM
Secularism refers to the separation of religion from the State. In the context of the Indian Constitution, it implies that the State does not favour or endorse any particular religion and ensures that all religions are treated equally.
Problem: In countries with multiple religions, one religion usually constitutes the majority. If this majority has control over State power, they can potentially use this authority to oppress minority religions.
Solution: By separating religion from State, secularism ensures that the majority cannot misuse State resources or power to discriminate against or persecute minority religions.
Problem: Any form of religious domination threatens the democratic rights guaranteed to every citizen, irrespective of their religion.
