UNDERSTANDING MARGINALISATION

ADIVASIS IN INDIA: AN OVERVIEW

Definition And Identity

Origin Of Term: The term ‘Adivasi’ translates to “original inhabitants”. It denotes the indigenous and often tribal population of India, which has a rich history and diverse cultural heritage.

Distinct From Mainstream Populations: Adivasis have unique traditions, practices, and beliefs that distinguish them from other communities in India. Unlike many communities that are organised around the principles of caste or monarchy, Adivasi societies usually have a decentralised structure with minimal hierarchies.

Population And Distribution

1.Constituent Percentage: Adivasis comprise approximately 8% of India’s population.

2.Geographical Spread: They are predominantly found in states like Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and others, including the northeastern states. Odisha alone is home to more than 60 different tribal groups.

3.Industrial Hubs: Some of India’s major industrial and mining centres, such as Jamshedpur, Rourkela, and Bhilai, are located in Adivasi regions.
