Water is a fundamental necessity for life and maintaining good health.
It plays a vital role in preventing numerous water-related diseases. India sees a large number of cases related to diseases like diarrhoea, dysentery, and cholera.
An alarming number of deaths, especially among children under five, occur daily in India due to these diseases. Access to safe drinking water can prevent these deaths.
The Constitution of India integrates the right to water as part of the Right to Life, denoted by Article 21.
This indicates that every individual, irrespective of their financial status, has the right to adequate water to meet daily needs at an affordable price. In essence, water access should be universal.
Various court cases have further cemented this right, with both High Courts and the Supreme Court upholding that the right to safe drinking water is fundamental. An instance from 2007 involves the Andhra Pradesh High Court, which upheld this right when a textile company was accused of contaminating groundwater in Mahbubnagar district.
