TRIBES, NOMADS AND SETTLED COMMUNITIES
Unlike the dominant Brahmanical society, many societies in the subcontinent did not adhere to the rituals and hierarchical structures prescribed by Brahmins.
These societies, often referred to as tribes, were not divided into numerous unequal classes. Kinship was a significant binding factor within these tribes.
Many tribal groups practiced agriculture, while others were hunter-gatherers, herders, or a combination thereof.
Some tribes were nomadic, frequently moving from one area to another.
Land and pasture were commonly held and governed by the tribal community, which then divided these resources amongst individual households based on tribal rules.
