Samantas And Their Role

The system described refers to a feudal-like structure where local landlords or warrior chiefs, known as ‘samantas’, were integrated into the administration of existing kingdoms. They served the king or overlord in several ways:

1.Tributes: Samantas were expected to bring gifts, which could be in the form of money, goods, or in-kind contributions to the king.

2.Court Presence: They had to present themselves at the court of the king, which was a symbolic acknowledgment of their allegiance and also a means to be involved in the royal politics.

3.Military Support: They provided military assistance to the king, which was crucial for maintaining the larger empire or kingdom’s integrity and for its expansionist endeavours.

Ascension Of Samantas To Higher Status

As these samantas accumulated power and wealth, they often sought to assert their independence and elevate their status by adopting grandiose titles such as maha-samanta (great feudal lord) or maha-mandaleshvara (great lord of a circle/region). This shift was not just about power but also about prestige and recognition of their increased status.
