WORKING ON THE STREETS

Overview: Street workers form a significant part of the urban labour force. In Ahmedabad city, for instance, 12% of workers operate on the streets.

Nature Of Work: These workers typically engage in selling goods, offering services, or repairing items. They function independently without being tied to any employer.

Characteristics:

1.Self-Organised: They plan and manage their work autonomously.

2.Temporary Workspaces: Their work stations are not permanent and lack security.

3.Family Involvement: Often, the products they vend are prepared by family members, demonstrating a combined family effort.

4.Legality: The right to street vending is acknowledged as a legitimate way for individuals to earn their livelihood.
