FROM HUNTING-GATHERING TO GROWING FOOD
‘Hunter-gatherers’ were our earliest ancestors who lived primarily off the land, relying on natural resources for their subsistence. Their diet and lifestyle revolved around:
1.Hunting: They pursued wild animals for meat. This wasn’t just a random activity but required in-depth knowledge of animal behaviours, tracking skills, and teamwork.
2.Fishing: Fish provided an essential source of protein. Rivers, lakes, and coastal regions would have been favourable areas for such activities.
3.Gathering: A significant portion of their diet came from gathering plants, including fruits, roots, nuts, seeds, and more. This required knowledge of edible, medicinal, and poisonous plants.
Hunter-gatherers were constantly on the move. Here are the primary reasons:
1.Exhaustion Of Local Resources: Remaining in one place would deplete the local resources, both plant and animal. Moving allowed areas to recover and regenerate.
2.Animal Migration: Prey animals like deer or wild cattle migrated in search of food. Hunter-gatherers needed to follow these migrations to ensure a consistent food supply.
