THE IRON PILLAR AT MEHRAULI, DELHI

Picture 1

The iron pillar, located in Mehrauli, Delhi, is an outstanding testament to the proficiency of ancient Indian craftspersons.

Measuring 7.2m in height and weighing over 3 tonnes, this pillar is unique because even after 1500 years, it has not exhibited any signs of rust. This resistance to corrosion is often viewed with astonishment given the age and material of the pillar.

An inscription on the pillar alludes to a ruler named Chandra, who is believed to belong to the Gupta dynasty, helping to date the monument.
