Colonialism Defined

Colonialism is the practice where one country establishes dominance over another. In the modern era, Western colonialism, particularly the British variety, has left the most significant mark.

Contrast Of Colonialism With Earlier Empires

One of the main differences between British colonial rule and prior invasions is the depth and breadth of changes introduced by colonialism. Historically, conquerors would annex territories, and while they would dominate weaker entities, they largely maintained the existing economic systems, deriving their benefit from tributes and economic surpluses.

British Capitalist Colonialism

The British approach was unique due to its capitalist underpinnings. Unlike conquerors of the past, the British aimed to restructure and redirect the economy of the colonised region for the benefit of British capitalism.
