WORLD CLIMATE AND CLIMATE CHANGE

KOEPPEN’S SCHEME OF CLASSIFICATION OF CLIMATE

Köppen’s scheme utilises both capital letters (A, B, C, D, E) and smaller letters to differentiate between the broad climatic groups and their specific types, respectively.

CLIMATIC GROUPS ACCORDING TO KOEPPEN

Climatic Group

Name/Description

Group Characteristics

A

Tropical

Average temperature of the coldest month is 18°C or higher

B

Dry Climates

Potential evaporation exceeds precipitation

C

Warm Temperate (Mid-latitude) climates

The average temperature of the coldest month is higher than –3°C but below 18°C

D

Cold Snow Forest Climates

The average temperature of the coldest month is –3°C or below

E

Cold Climates

Average temperature for all months is below 10°C

H

High Land

Cold due to elevation

Major Climatic Groups

A – Tropical/Megathermal Climates: High average temperatures, and typically high precipitation throughout the year.

1.Af: Tropical rainforest climate. ‘f’ indicates no significant dry season.

2.Am: Tropical monsoon climate. Heavy rainfall, but with a marked dry season.

3.Aw: Tropical wet and dry or savannah climate. Winter is dry.

B – Arid and Semi-Arid Climates: Defined by the insufficient amount of precipitation they receive.
