UNDERSTANDING PREHISTORY AND PREHISTORIC ART

Prehistory And Its Study

The term ‘prehistory’ refers to the period before written records. Scholars have worked diligently to understand this era through archaeological digs, studying fossils, and examining cave paintings. Unlike periods for which there are written records, understanding prehistory requires a multi-disciplinary approach, combining anthropology, palaeontology, archaeology, and art history among other fields. The remains, like tools, pottery, and cave paintings, serve as clues to piece together the lifestyle, skills, and perhaps even the beliefs of prehistoric people.

Palaeolithic Age: Old Stone Age

The Palaeolithic Age, often referred to as the Old Stone Age, marks a significant phase in human development. During this time, humans lived as hunter-gatherers and started using tools made of stone. While the Lower Palaeolithic period is largely absent of artistic representations, by the time of the Upper Palaeolithic, we start to see considerable evidence of art, especially in the form of cave paintings.

The Purpose Of Cave Paintings

The cave paintings from this period are often sophisticated and detailed, depicting animals, humans, and various symbols. The exact reasons for these paintings can only be speculated upon, but some theories suggest:

1.Spiritual Or Ritualistic Meaning: Some scholars believe that these drawings could have been a form of spiritual expression or part of hunting rituals.
