The Gender Division In Society

The division based on gender is pervasive across societies but is often overlooked when studying politics. While many consider this division to be biological, it is, in fact, socially constructed based on cultural expectations and norms.

The Public/Private Dichotomy

Societal norms often dictate that women are responsible for the domestic sphere (housework, child-rearing, etc.) while men handle the outside world, a clear manifestation of the public/private division. However, this division is not so clear-cut. Many women also work outside the home in both urban and rural settings, but their labour often goes unrecognised and undervalued.

1.Underrepresentation In Politics

The consequence of this labour division and the undervaluation of women’s work is their limited role in public life, particularly in politics. Even though women make up roughly half the global population, their representation in the corridors of power is not proportional. Historically, men were the only ones allowed to participate in public affairs, including voting and holding office.
