THE EMERGENCE OF SOCIO-CULTURAL CHANGE IN EARLY 19TH CENTURY INDIA
Rammohun Roy is a seminal figure in the history of modern India, recognized for his extensive efforts towards the social, religious, intellectual, and political rejuvenation of Indian society.
Born in 1772 in Bengal, Rammohun Roy was exposed to a variety of cultural and religious ideas, including Islam, Hinduism, and Christianity.
His education, which included Persian, Arabic, and Sanskrit, in addition to his later interest in English, allowed him to engage with a wide range of religious and philosophical texts.
1.Campaign Against Sati: Rammohun Roy is perhaps best known for his opposition to 'sati', a practice where a widow was compelled to sacrifice herself on her husband's funeral pyre. His efforts were instrumental in the eventual abolition of sati in 1829.
