The Establishment Of British Paramountcy In Bengal

Introduction

The British occupation of Bengal marked a significant turn in the history of India, laying the groundwork for British dominance in the region. This period is complex, involving military conflicts, political manoeuvres, and economic strategies

The Battle of Plassey (1757)

1.Background: The Battle of Plassey is widely regarded as the starting point of British colonial rule in India. It was a decisive battle between the English East India Company, led by Robert Clive, and the Nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-Daulah.

2.Outcome and Significance: The defeat of Siraj-ud-Daulah led to the establishment of British political sway over Bengal and, eventually, over vast areas of India. The battle demonstrated the effectiveness of the military tactics and alliances the British had honed during their earlier conflicts with the French in South India.

Preceding Conflicts: British vs. French in South India

1.Anglo-French Rivalry: Before the conquest of Bengal, the British and French were engaged in a series of conflicts known as the Carnatic Wars in South India. These were part of the global struggle for colonial dominance between the British and French empires.
