THE MARATHA
1.Initial Roles: Marathas initially served as soldiers in the armies of the Deccan states such as Bijapur, Ahmadnagar, and Golkonda. Their control over hill-forts, although limited compared to the more important forts manned by Muslim qiladars, established them as a significant military force.
2.Titles and Recognition: Maratha leaders were often conferred with titles like raja, naik, and rao, which helped elevate their status and influence within these kingdoms.
Bijapur’s Use of Marathas: Ibrahim Adil Shah of Bijapur notably employed Marathas as bargirs (cavalrymen paid in cash rather than land) and utilized them in conflicts against the Nizam Shahi rulers of Ahmadnagar. This integration extended to administrative roles, enhancing the influence of Marathas within these states.
