GOVERNANCE AND SOCIAL STRUCTURES OF THE VIJAYANAGARA EMPIRE

Administration

The Role Of The King

The king of Vijayanagar was the central figure in the administration, embodying absolute authority in all spheres of governance - civil, judicial, and military. This autocratic power, however, was tempered by the king's commitment to the welfare of his subjects, a principle deeply rooted in Dharma.

Autocratic Authority

1.Civil Authority: The king had ultimate control over civil administration, including economic policies and public works.

2.Judicial Authority: All judicial decisions either originated from the king or were sanctioned by him, ensuring a unified legal system under his directive.

3.Military Command: The military was directly under the king’s command, used to expand the kingdom's territories and suppress internal revolts.

Guided by Dharma

1.Moral Responsibility: Despite his autocratic rule, the king was expected to uphold Dharma — the cosmic law and order — as his moral guide.
