HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Overview

The Constitution of India is the supreme law of the land, providing the legal framework for the political, social, and economic systems of the country. Adopted on November 26, 1949, and coming into effect on January 26, 1950, it marks the birth of the Republic of India.

Drafting Process

The drafting of the Constitution was undertaken by a Constituent Assembly formed in 1946, consisting of 389 members elected by provincial and princely state assemblies. Dr. Rajendra Prasad chaired the assembly, and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was the chairman of the drafting committee. The drafting process, which took nearly three years, involved numerous meetings, debates, and consultations with legal experts, political leaders, and social activists.

Sources of Inspiration

The Constitution drew inspiration from several sources:

1.Government of India Act of 1935: Provided a significant part of the structural framework.

2.US Constitution: Influenced the federal structure and the inclusion of fundamental rights.

3.Irish Constitution: Inspired the Directive Principles of State Policy.
