EARLY MODERN, MODERN AND BENGAL SCHOOL OF PAINTING
Decline of Traditional Styles: The introduction of photography in mid-19th century India initiated a shift in artistic preferences, as photography offered a new, more precise method of documentation. This technological advancement led to a decline in traditional painting styles, which were previously used for capturing historical and cultural narratives.
1.Adoption of Western Techniques: Concurrent with the rise of photography, Indian art saw the integration of European academic styles, particularly in oil painting. Art schools established by the British promoted this European medium, which was adapted to depict Indian themes and subjects.
2.Raja Ravi Varma's Contributions: Raja Ravi Varma, a self-taught artist from the Travancore Court in Kerala, became a pivotal figure in this transition. Varma excelled in academic realism by studying European paintings and applying these techniques to Indian epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
