TOWARDS FREEDOM: INDIA'S JOURNEY (1927–1947) – IV

The Intersection Of War And Revolution: India, 1939-1945

Picture 1

The outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 significantly impacted the Indian National Movement, bringing to the fore the contradictions between the fight against fascism abroad and the quest for independence from colonial rule at home.

The Outbreak of World War II and India's Involvement

1.Nazi Expansion: The Second World War commenced with Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland, following the annexation of Austria and Czechoslovakia. This aggressive expansion led Britain and France to support Poland, signalling the start of widespread conflict.

2.India's Entry into the War: The British government declared India a belligerent in the war without consulting Indian leaders or the elected members of the Central Legislature, sparking immediate controversy and resentment among Indian nationalists.

The Congress's Stance on the War

1.Sympathy with Anti-Fascist Forces: The Indian National Congress expressed sympathy for nations facing fascist aggression and was willing to support democratic forces against fascism.

2.Demand for Freedom: Despite their willingness to help, Congress leaders argued that a nation under colonial rule could not genuinely support another's freedom fight. They demanded that India be granted freedom, or at least significant power be transferred to Indian hands, as a precondition for active participation in the war.
