TOWARDS FREEDOM: INDIA'S JOURNEY (1927–1947) – III

The Path To Self-Rule: Indian Nationalism (1935–1939)

The Government Of India Act, 1935

The period leading up to the enactment of the Government of India Act of 1935 was marked by significant political developments both in India and in Britain.

Context: The Third Round Table Conference

1.Absence of Congress: The Third Round Table Conference convened in London in November 1932 without the participation of the Indian National Congress leaders, mirroring the exclusion in the previous conferences.

2.Outcome: The discussions at the conference laid the groundwork for the Government of India Act of 1935, shaping the future political landscape of colonial India.

Provisions of the Government of India Act of 1935

1.All India Federation: The Act proposed the creation of an All India Federation consisting of provinces from British India and princely states. However, the federation was never fully realized as it depended on the princely states' accession.

2.Provincial Autonomy: It introduced provincial autonomy, replacing diarchy (introduced by the Government of India Act 1919) and providing elected Indian ministers with control over provincial administrations.
