UNION TERRITORIES
Union Territories (UTs) in India are unique regions that are governed directly by the Central Government, unlike states which have their own governments. The concept of Union Territories was introduced in the Constitution of India through Article 1, and their administration is detailed in Part VIII (Articles 239 to 241)
Definition and Administration
India is defined as a "Union of States" and Union Territories (UTs) are specific areas that fall under the direct control of the Central Government.
Article 239 states that the President of India appoints an Administrator for each Union Territory to represent and exercise the powers of the President.
Governance Structure
The governance of UTs can vary:
Some UTs like Delhi and Puducherry have their own legislative assemblies and councils of ministers.
Other UTs are governed directly by the President through an Administrator.
