CENTRAL INFORMATION COMMISSION

Introduction

The Central Information Commission (CIC) in India is an independent body created under the Right to Information Act (RTI Act) of 2005. The RTI Act gives citizens the right to access information from public authorities, which helps promote transparency, accountability, and good governance. The CIC is responsible for ensuring the effective implementation of the RTI Act, addressing complaints and appeals from citizens who are not satisfied with the information provided by public authorities.

Chief Information Commissioner (CIC)

The CIC is the head of the Central Information Commission and oversees its administration and functioning.

Appointed by the President of India based on recommendations from a committee comprising: 

The Prime Minister 

The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha 

A Union Cabinet Minister nominated by the Prime Minister

Information Commissioners (ICs)

Information Commissioners assist the CIC in adjudicating cases and making decisions.

Up to ten Information Commissioners can be appointed by the President of India, following recommendations from the same committee responsible for the appointment of the CIC.

Tenure

Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) and Information Commissioners (ICs)

Duration: They serve for a term of five years from the date they assume office or until they reach the age of 65, whichever comes first.

Reappointment: They are not eligible for reappointment after completing their tenure.
