TREND ANALYSIS

Comprehensive Trend Analysis (2013–2024)

Rising Prominence of Abstract and Philosophical Themes

Observation

In earlier years (2013–2016), while philosophical undercurrents existed, a larger proportion of essay prompts addressed tangible socio-political or economic issues. Over time, a decisive shift has occurred, where the paper increasingly presents questions that require interpreting broad concepts like happiness, rationality, perception, creativity, or doubt. By 2021–2024, we find a notable surge in topics that are deliberately open-ended and metaphorical, pushing candidates to engage in conceptual thinking rather than reiterating facts.

Examples

(2024) “There is no path to happiness; Happiness is the path.” This asks the candidate to philosophically dissect the nature of happiness, shifting from a destination-oriented mindset to a process-oriented understanding, and then connect it to societal well-being, policy-making, and ethical frameworks.

(2021) “The real is rational and the rational is real.” Here, the aspirant must navigate philosophical terrains (Hegelian logic, rationalism, realism) and link them to real-world scenarios—governance, decision-making, and knowledge systems.

Why This Matters

Candidates must develop the skill to interpret abstractions, employ ethical and philosophical reasoning, and connect these concepts to diverse real-world domains—economy, culture, environment, and policy. Data alone is insufficient; the examiner tests depth of insight, the ability to infer meanings, and to apply intellectual frameworks creatively.
