PROTECTED AREA NETWORK
A protected area network, also known as a system of protected areas, refers to a coordinated group of protected areas that work together to achieve conservation goals on a regional, national, or global scale. These areas are designated for the protection and conservation of biodiversity, cultural heritage, and other important environmental and cultural values. The network can include national parks, wildlife reserves, marine protected areas, cultural heritage sites, and other conservation-designated areas.
The creation and management of a protected area network are typically led by government agencies and supported by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other stakeholders. The primary goal is to ensure the long-term protection and preservation of the natural and cultural resources within the network for present and future generations. This coordinated approach enhances the effectiveness of conservation efforts by providing a comprehensive strategy that addresses ecological, social, and economic dimensions.
The National Wildlife Database Cell of the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) has been developing a National Wildlife Information System (NWIS) on the Protected Areas of the country. As of the latest data:
India has a network of 998 Protected Areas, including:
106 National Parks
567 Wildlife Sanctuaries
105 Conservation Reserves
