Project Tiger

Bengal tiger - Wikipedia

Overview

Project Tiger is a landmark conservation initiative launched by the Indian government in 1973 to protect the Bengal tiger, which was on the verge of extinction due to poaching, habitat loss, and human-tiger conflicts. The project was implemented under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, with the aim of ensuring a viable population of tigers in their natural habitat.

Background

Prior to the launch of Project Tiger, the population of Bengal tigers in India had declined significantly due to hunting, poaching, habitat destruction, and fragmentation. In 1972, the Indian government passed the Wildlife Protection Act to protect wildlife and their habitats. The same year, the government also established the Tiger Task Force to develop a conservation plan for tigers in India, which resulted in the launch of Project Tiger in 1973.

Objectives

The main objectives of Project Tiger are to:

Increase the tiger population in India by protecting their habitats and providing suitable conditions for breeding.
