DISASTER RISK REDUCTION STRATEGIES

Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR)

Overview and Implementation in India

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR) 2015-2030, adopted at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai, Japan, is a global blueprint for reducing disaster risks. It focuses on understanding disaster risk, improving risk governance, investing in resilience, and enhancing disaster preparedness. India, as a signatory, has aligned its national disaster management strategies with the principles of the SFDRR.

Implementation in India

1.National Disaster Management Plan (NDMP) 2016: India was the first country to align its national plan with the SFDRR. The NDMP outlines actions to be taken by different sectors to reduce disaster risks and strengthen resilience.

2.Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Programmes: India has integrated DRR into its development policies, such as the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, which includes provisions for disaster-resilient housing.

3.Capacity Building and Community Resilience: Initiatives like the National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project (NCRMP) have been crucial in building infrastructure and capacities in coastal regions to mitigate cyclone risks.

Relevant Statistics

1.Cyclone Preparedness: The NCRMP has helped reduce the number of fatalities from cyclones significantly. For instance, Cyclone Phailin in 2013 resulted in fewer than 50 deaths, compared to over 10,000 in the 1999 Odisha cyclone, due to improved early warning systems and evacuations.
