ELECTION COMMISSION
The Election Commission of India (ECI) is a vital autonomous constitutional body responsible for overseeing and administering the electoral processes in India. Established on January 25, 1950, under Article 324 of the Indian Constitution, the ECI ensures free and fair elections at various levels, including the Parliament, State Legislatures, and local government bodies.
Article 324 of the Indian Constitution
Grants the ECI the power of superintendence, direction, and control over elections to the Parliament, state legislatures, and the offices of the President and Vice President of India.
Covers both Central and state governments, making it an all-India body.
Representation of the People Act
Governs the conduct of elections alongside other laws and rules.
Allows the ECI to act appropriately when the enacted laws are insufficient to deal with a situation during the conduct of elections.
