HARAPPAN CIVILIZATION
The discovery and subsequent research of the Harappan civilization, initially identified in 1920-21 through the pioneering excavations at Mohenjodaro by R.D. Banerjee and at Harappa by D.R. Sahni, marked a significant advancement in our understanding of ancient civilizations in the Indian subcontinent
1.Initial Discoveries: The civilization was uncovered nearly a century ago at two primary sites: Mohenjodaro in Sindh and Harappa in Punjab, which were part of undivided India at the time.
2.Naming Convention: Initially called the Indus civilization due to its discovery in the Indus valley, it was also named the Harappan civilization after Harappa, the site where its relics were first identified.
1.Settlements Known by 1947: At the time of India's partition in 1947, only about 40 settlements of this civilization were known.
